This tour is now confirmed and will operate per this page.

Join Seven-0-Seven Operations for a day-long Slow Rail Journey from Melbourne to Stony Point (via Frankston) hauled by steam locomotive R707 - the first time in many years that a heritage train has ventured beyond Frankston. Please note that due to operational restrictions the train will feature steam locomotive R707 between Melbourne and Frankston (and v.v.) and will be hauled by two P Class diesel locomotives between Frankston and Stony Point.

O

Our train, a unique combination of the old and the new - the restored and the modern, will depart Flinders Street Station in the heart of Melbourne in the morning to commence it's journey to the coast. Uniquely today's train will feature steam locomotive R707 hauling a set of modern H-class V/Line carriages and very likely supported by a two P Class V/Line locomotives - a rarely seen combination!

After departing Flinders Street, we run through Richmond and South Yarra along Melbourne's busiest railway corridor toward Caulfield.

In Caulfield the train will take the south fork continuing south along the Frankston line. Pass through the new Glen Huntly trench and station - opened to traffic on 31 July 2023, before continuing along new sections of sky rail and a number of newly constructed stations rebuilt as part of level crossing removal works.

As the buildings of Melbourne disappear behind the train relax in the comfortable onboard seating as we continue along the Frankston Line, complete with some glimpses of Port Phillip Bay, as we speed toward the coast.

After a brief stop in Frankston where R707 will be detached we leave the suburban electric system behind and head inland, across the Mornington Peninsula toward Stony Point and Western Port Bay.

The Stony Point line was opened in 1889 to connect Melbourne and Frankston with the rural towns of Baxter, Hastings, and Bittern, amongst others. Branches were built to Red Hill and Mornington (which closed in 1953 and 1981 respectively). Passenger services on the entire line were withdrawn on 10 June 1981, and the section of line from Long Island Junction (the junction for the branch to the Hastings Steel Mill) to Stony Point was closed on 22 June 1981. Services then recommenced on 26 September 1984.

Upon our arrival in Stony Point at 1:15pm the group make your way to the jetty for an hour cruise on Western Port Bay operated by Wildcoast Cruises. Please note the cruise will depart from Stony Point Jetty at 1:30 pm and we ask guests to make their way to the ferry. Plenty of time is allocated for photos of the train upon our return.

At 2:30pm guests will return to Stony Point to await our return train journey to Melbourne. Enjoy a picnic on the seaside, walk along the coastal rock formations of this UNESCO declared Biosphere Reserve, and beaches (the tide will be going out exposing the rock formations in the bay) or stroll to a nearby cafe in Crib Point.

Sadly the cafe in Stony Point has closed, however there are a number of cafes located a short 1.5km stroll from the station in Crib Point through the Woolley Beach Reserve.

Guests wishing to walk to Crib Point can return to Stony Point on the 3:39 pm Metro Train (a single car Sprinter) arriving back in Stony Point with plenty of time to join our train back to Melboune, however please do not miss this train as we are unable to pick up in Crib Point.

After a spectacular afternoon by the seaside, we re-board the train to commence our journey back to the city, departing at 4:35pm. Relax onboard as the train retraces its steps through Crib Point, Hastings, Somerville and Baxter toward Frankston, and then back along the Frankston suburban line to Flinders Street where the train will arrive at 6:07pm after a day you will not soon forget.

Timetable - Please note revised departure times
