LAN Carriages

All of our fully restored ex-Southern Aurora LAN Twinette cars entered service on the flagship Southern Aurora between Melbourne and Sydney in April 1962. They were constructed as part of a fleet of 34 stainless steel carriages built for the train by the Commonwealth Engineering workshops in Granville, NSW.

In 1987 after the withdrawal of the Southern Aurora, the carriages were refurbished in Victoria for use on the Sydney/Melbourne Express. They were withdrawn from service in August 1994 when XPT services replaced all trains between Melbourne and Sydney.

The carriages were restored to their former glory by Seven-0-Seven Operations volunteers in partnership with Transport Heritage NSW.

LAN Carriage Layout

Each LAN carriage originally included 20 uniquely designed single berth sleepers. Compartments are located on either side of a "zig-zag" shaped isle with beds that fold down running parallel to the carriage.

Shower and bathroom facilities are located at either end of the carriage.

"My partner and I had a wonderful trip behind a heritage steam train to Bacchus Marsh. The volunteers were wonderful and very helpful, and there was plenty of food and refreshments available to purchase onboard"

"Fantastic service from the volunteer train crew, good hardy meals (bacon and eggs for breakfast, lasagne, salad & cheesecake for lunch) did not go hungry! Well provisioned cabins, at seat service for some meals, welcome drink and yummy nibbles. Well organised, ran on time, interesting off train activities. Hard to fault!"
